Aquilegia Seeds

Aquilegias are elegant flowers and reaching between 60-80cm(24-31in) they are ideal for the middle of the border. Varying in shades they are suitable for any colour scheme and look great in relaxed planting arrangements, having a light airy appearance.

These fascinating, herbaceous perennials for the early summer garden do best in sandy, loamy soils and will not tolerate heavy clay. They will thrive in full sun or partial shade and are generally trouble-free throughout the year. Even before the plants come into bloom, their attractive, lacy foliage provides a charming foil to many spring flowers.

How to Sow and Grow Aquilegia
Sow indoors for surest results, 0.5cm(¼in) deep in a tray of compost. Water well and place in a cold frame. Seedlings usually appear in 21-42 days. Transplant individually to 8cm(3in) pots. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions before planting out 30cm(12in) apart. Sow outdoors in a seed bed 0.5cm(¼in) deep into finely prepared soil. Thin seedlings before transplanting to flowering position in the autumn.
