For many of us the radish was our first taste of gardening, as they are one of the simplest and quickest of vegetables to grow. An open site is best, but midsummer sowings can also be made in light shade or inter-sown between other, slower maturing vegetables. In summer the best radishes are produced when grown with plenty of moisture. If they happen to run to seed, the seed pods are also edible. Remember they are brassicas, so rotate accordingly, especially with winter radishes, which are in the ground for longer than summer-cropping ones.
How to Sow and Grow Radishes
Sow outdoors thinly where they are to crop, 1.5cm (½in) deep directly into finely prepared soil which has already been watered. Allow 23cm (9in) between rows. Early sowings may benefit from cloche or fleece protection, UV30 Envirofleece is ideal. Seedlings usually appear in 7-10 days. Water well until plants are established.
