Outdoors: sow thinly, March-July where they are to crop, 1.5cm (½") deep, directly into finely-prepared, fertile, moisture-retentive soil, which has already been watered. Allow 25cm (10") between rows. Early sowings may benefit from cloche protection. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Thin out to 15cm (6") apart. Water well until plants are established. Regular sowings, made every two to three weeks, will ensure a continuous supply. Harvest: May-October.
Organically Grown Seed: Grown by dedicated farmers, using strictly organic methods, these seeds have been approved by The Organic Farmers and Growers Association (Certificate UK2).
All lettuce can be eaten as baby salad leaves, but some types are ideal for use as ‘cut and come again’ (take just one or two leaves from each plant at a time, they will then keep growing and provide ‘baby’ salad leaves over a much longer period – re-growing for 3-4 cuts). They are also ideal grown in pots and container.
Cos or Romaine – A little slower to mature than butterheads, with crisp, oval hearts
Butterhead – Quick to mature with a loose heart and soft leaves
Crisphead/Iceberg – Large crisp heads with solid hearts and few outer leaves
Loose Leaf – Easily sown direct in the garden or in patio pots. These do not heart up and are ideal for ‘cut and come again’ salads, taking a few leaves at a time, or for harvesting whole.
Mixed Leaf – Perfect for pots and containers, superb mixes of different shades, textures and colours.
