Outdoors: sow thinly, March-September where they are to crop, 2.5cm (1") deep, directly into finely-prepared, fertile, moisture-retentive soil, which has already been watered. Allow 30cm (1') between rows. Seedlings usually appear in 7-21 days. Keep moist. Harvest unthinned as baby leaves for salads, or thin to 10cm (4") apart, for 'teen' leaves to use like spinach. Thin to 20cm (8") for mature plants, which can be stir-fried or steamed. Or sow indoors October-March, to grow in a tunnel or greenhouse. Sow into trays of compost in gentle warmth. Transplant to borders or large pots when approx. 7.5cm (3") tall. Keep moist. Harvest: All year.
Late spring and summer crops are ready to harvest from approx. 21-35 days. Autumn and winter crops take approx. 6-9 days, depending on temperature.
