Onion Snowball Sets (Spring Planting)

Our spring-planting Snowball onion sets are suitable for planting from January onwards. As a hardy variety, Snowball onions can tolerate frost and cold conditions well. But for best results, we recommend planting from March to April, once the soil has warmed up and is no longer waterlogged.

To plant your Snowball onion sets, space them about 10–15 cm apart in rows. Push each set into the soil with the pointed end facing upwards, placing them with the tip just below the surface. Water them in well after planting to help them settle, and keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season, but avoid waterlogging. For best results, feed with a balanced fertiliser to encourage strong growth. 

The spring-planting Onion Snowball will be ready to harvest in mid to late summer, typically around July to August. Once the leaves begin to yellow and collapse, leave in the ground for an additional 2 weeks. Gently lift the onions from the soil using a fork or hand tool, and allow them to dry in a warm, airy spot for a few days before storing. The onions are ready to store once their skins are dry and papery.
