Onion Pink Panther Sets (Spring Planting)

Like most of our spring planting onions, Pink Panther onion sets are best planted in early spring, from March to April, when the soil is no longer frozen or waterlogged. Aim to plant them when daytime temperatures are consistently above 5°C, as cold, wet conditions can cause rotting. Avoid planting too early in heavy, wet soil, as this can delay growth.

Once planted, Pink Panther onions need regular but light watering, especially in dry spells. Keep the area free from weeds, as onions struggle with competition. Apply a general-purpose fertiliser every few weeks to support steady growth. As the bulbs develop, reduce watering to help them mature. Avoid covering the bulbs with soil; onions naturally push themselves up as they grow. Watch for signs of pests or disease, like onion fly or mildew, and remove affected plants if necessary.

Harvest Pink Panther onions when their leaves turn yellow and start to fall over, typically from July to August for spring-planted sets. Wait for a dry day to lift them from the soil, using a fork to loosen them if you need to. Once harvested, let the onions cure in the sun for a couple of weeks or move them to a dry, airy space if rain is expected. Proper curing helps them store well for several months.
