Planting & Harvesting

Sow & Grow

Sow indoors, March to May, in pots or trays of moist compost. Sow thinly, cover lightly with compost and keep at 15-20°C, keep moist. Seedlings usually appear 7-14 days. Thin plants to further pots or trays if necessary. Plant out from late May, spacing 15cm (6in) apart. Sow all year round to grow in pots on the windowsill. Pinch out the growing tip of the main stem to encourage bushy.
Or, sow outdoors, May to June in final growing position, thin as necessary. For a continuous harvest make sowings at three weekly intervals.
Harvest: June to November. Pick leaves as required

When cooking with basil, add the leaves at the last minute to retain flavour.
