Did you know?

Asparagus is, of course, in season at the moment, albeit for a short while, but as well as being one of the most delicious of all vegetables it is one of very few to contain glutathione, an antioxidant found in the watery part of all human cells. Glutathione is sometimes referred to as a ‘master antioxidant’ as it not only goes some way to protecting our DNA from damage, but also gives a boost to the immune system.

Asparagus also gives us rutin, a super nutrient which works really well with Vitamin C to strengthen the walls of tiny blood vessels just under the skin. Many people think that asparagus is difficult to grow or that there is some mystique surrounding its culture. Wrong! Asparagus is very easy to grow, it does not require a raised bed, and will grow perfectly well in most gardens. An asparagus bed can remain productive for 20 years or more, so it pays to give a little thought to the siting of yours before you sow your seeds or plant the crowns.
