The leaves and stmes are indeed prickly, this negative is also a plus as generally the plants are not eaten by pests! It had huge flower heads opening upto 15cm/6in across with beautiful, prominent stamens and they are loved by bees. Plants will also grow in those difficult, dry, sunny situations.
